Video of the Week: Jackie Stewart Tests and Evaluates the Tyrrell P34 Six Wheeler

Here we see Jackie Stewart, only recently retired, coming back to the cockpit to test the wild-looking Tyrrell 6 wheeler F1 car.

The onboard footage is really remarkable. Some killer camera angles and great sound too!

Anatomie d'un Depart: Well worth 11 minutes of your life

In 1985, Elf made this stellar little documentary showing the lead-up to the start of an F1 race.  All the wonderful master drivers of the turbo era are there, from Keke Rosberg to Niki Lauda to Nigel Mansell, and of course the young Senna who we watch as he applies a sticker to his own helmet visor with fastidious precision. The music is awesomely period. Well worth the 11 minute running time.

Chapeau, Amaury!

Ferrari 308 GTB Battles Alfettas at Bathurst

This is a very well done amateur video, featuring multiple camera angles. The car sounds fantastic, and Mount Panorama is probably one of my favorite tracks in the world, but I really love the battles this guy is having with a gaggle of 4-cylinder Alfetta GTs!  He obviously has the horsepower advantage on the long back straight, with the V8 in his car. But the Alfetta's superior chassis (and possibly aerodynamics as well) allows them to hang on for lap after lap! Fantastic stuff!

Weekend Watching: Tour de Corse Historique in 3 parts

This well-made 20 minute documentary has some fantastic footage from the 2008 Tour de Corse Historique rally.  The footage is a well edited combination of in-car and roadside camerawork, along with French language interviews with a very jolly group of drivers.  If you love Alpines, 911s and other vintage rally machines, this is a must-watch. It's incredible how bad these Corsican backroads are, and the occasional presence of animals on the course gives us a real step back in time to the days of the Targa Florio and other road races from when these cars (and many of the drivers too!) were young.

Video of the Week: F2 Onboard at the Arosa Hillclimb

The Arosa Hillclimb is small event held in Switzerland that I hadn't heard of til recently. This year will be its 8th running. There are quite a few onboard videos popping up, showing the breathtaking scenery and challenging curves that make me really want to visit there someday.

Here we have a Brabham F2 car being driven up the 7.8km hill. The driving is pretty conservative, but who cares?  The car, combined with the twisting country road lined with stone walls and wooden fences make it feel like a real step back in time.
